Cartagena

Cartagena is placed in the southeast of the Region of Murcia and is the second city of the Region.

Bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, it is a city that holds a strategic position, due to its natural port, since the creation of it, which has been a military referent in the course of its historical trajectory. This remains a key Navel station today.

History: founded by Asdrubal in 227 BC, it was one of the most important centres in the Roman Hispania. Its position gives it attractiveness for all the civilizations that occupied Spain.

Culture: The initiative ‘Cartagena, Puerto de Culturas’, allows the visitor to enjoy from the cultural heritage and richness of the city (its origins, the military influence, that dates back to the medieval epoch, the castles…). Moreover, in July is celebrated the festival of the new music, ‘La Mar de Músicas’-.

Art: The most distant past can be found in the collections of the Archaeological Museums including the military remains in the Castillo de la Concepción, the Muralla del Mar, Arsenal Militar, Parque de Artillería, Hospital Militar the Escuela de Guardamarinas. The religious fervour of the Baroque churches of Carmen San Diego, Santo Domingo and Caridad, which have high quality sculptures and paintings. Furthermore, the rich seam, the result of the mining richness in the mountains, which left an architectural and urban development from the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century,This includes luxury buildings like las Casas Cervantes, Maestre or Clares; the submarine of Isaac Peral takes part as well of the identity of this city.

Gastronomy: It is the common gastronomy for a fishermen’s city, but at the same time has touches of the Huerta. Fish and salted fish, caldero (fishermen’s style) and its own vegetables.

Climate: The annual average is 20º in January (the coldest month) however, temperatures are never less than 12º and in August (the hottest) 28º- 40.

Festivals: The most outstanding are the Holy week processions with pointed hoods and images of sculptures like Salzillo; and the Carthaginian and Roman processions, celebrated in the last two weeks of September, which recreate the history of the city from its foundation until the Roman conquer.
