The Albufera del Mar Menor is the biggest salt lake in Europe (it covers 170 kmē). Located in the south-oriental coast of Spain, and it is separated from the Mediterranean Sea by La Manga, a strip of sand from which some channels come out linking both seas.
The Mar Menor has 73Km of coast and its shores have a series of beaches of transparent, very shallow, and mild waters, very rich in salt and iodine.
In the south of this small sea emerge the islets of La Perdiguera, Mayor, Redonda, Ciervo and Sujeto, and in summer there are daily trips to each one of them.
The Romans strongly appreciated the Mar Menor area, where they developed an important salted fish industry.
There was an important shipping as well, thanks to the fact that the Mar Menor was practically united with the Mediterranean sea. However, with the passing of time, due to a gradual land movement, both seas have been separated, reaching the present appearance a thousand years ago.
